Accommodation in Val d’isère

Basically there are three different types of accommodation you can stay in during your trip to Val d’isère. Between them they amount to something like 26000 tourist beds according to the most recent official figures – that’s a lot of tourists for a village with only 1600 permanent residents!

There are less hotels than there used to be as sadly several very popular hotels have recently been sold and redeveloped into luxury apartments – the Savoyarde, Kandahar and Altitude are another three that have gone this Summer.

There are also less fully serviced catered chalets than there used to be, thanks mainly to the joint effects of Brexit and Covid, though we still count well over 100 options for groups of as few as three guests to over twenty. Sometimes you rent out the whole place and sometimes you share the chalet with strangers who (hopefully) become new friends.

And these days a massive amount of the accommodation available in town is self catering, again for anything from a couple of people to large groups.

You can book direct with the accommodation provider, with a tour operator, via various agencies or increasingly using a peer-to-peer rental platform, with Airbnb being the most common.

If you don’t know where to start, an agency can be a great option as they do all the legwork, narrow down the different options that fit your dates, plans, group and budget and manage the booking for you. The best thing is it doesn’t usually cost you a penny more than it would to book direct!

We do strongly recommend though that you use a locally based agent who knows the resort inside out – both Kim from Simply Val d’Isère and Ken from Alpine Exclusive have been here nearly as long as we have! Alternatively you can use an agent who specialises in ski holidays such as Alpine Answers.

02. Chalet holidays in Val d’Isère

The "chalet holiday" is a particularly British institution – a house party in the Alps. Your chalet becomes your home from home for the week with the added benefit that someone else does all of the cooking and cleaning while you just relax and enjoy yourself.

03. Self-Catering Accomodation in Val Disere

French self-catering flats have historically had a bit of a bad reputation, probably justly deserved at one stage, as shoe-boxes cramming as many people as possible into ugly, 70s-style buildings – but not anymore.
