Val d’Isère Ski Area

04. Tignes – Tovière

For most people skiing over from Val d'Isère, Tovière is their first taste of Tignes. You'd expect the boundary between the two resorts to run along the ridge, but in fact the Tommeuses chair, just beyond the Folie Douce is a Tignes lift, so you'll need a full-area lift pass from here on.

The main run, Piste H, is one of Tignes' best cruising pistes. It's wide, open and forgiving all the way down to Val Claret, making it ideal for nervous intermediates building confidence or stronger skiers who simply want to have a blast.

Looking for something a bit more challenging? Drop directly beneath the Tovière bubble onto the steep black pitch, or head for Trolles.

The lower section of Trolles can be steep, icy and very bumpy, but if it looks a bit too much when you're standing on the lip, there's always the road round to the bottom. In fact all of the steep parts on these runs have easier routes that go around them if it turns out to be too challenging.

You can also reach Tignes from the top of the Borsat chair via an easy track that joins Piste Henri above the nursery slopes. This can be quite busy especially at the intersection so keep your eyes open and your speed down!

Toviere - off-piste access

There's plenty of accessible off-piste here too.

The Fingers Couloirs, Lavachet Wall and Arrière des Campanules are all surprisingly accessible from the lifts while, if you're up for a half-hour walk, Mickey's Ears is a classic. Make sure you book a guide for this.

From there you can ski back towards Lavachet or La Daille or, for a proper adventure, continue all the way down to the lake before taking a helicopter back to Val d'Isère.
