Things to do in Val d'Isère

05. Essential Services

Medical Services

The Medival Medical Centre is in the Le Crêt area. It's more like a mini A&E than a traditional doctor's surgery, with facilities to deal with most common ski injuries.

For more serious cases you may be referred to the hospital in Bourg Saint Maurice, around 30 km away. No appointment is needed, but don't forget to bring your travel insurance details.

Dentist

The dental surgery is also in the Medival building. It's mainly for local residents and appointments are often booked well in advance, but they may be able to fit you in if you have an emergency.

Physios

There are several excellent physiotherapists in Val d'Isère and it's usually possible to get an appointment quite quickly if you need one. For English speakers we recommend Jo Pollard, whose practice is right next door to Medival, or Action Sportive just round the corner. Both will also come to you if it’s easier.

Open Hours:
  • Mon-Fri: 8 AM - 5 PM
  • Saturday: 9 AM - 3 PM
  • Sunday: Closed

Post Office

The Post Office is in the Val Village area, just off the snow front. It's open Monday to Friday with a long lunch break, and on Saturday mornings during the winter season.

Police Station

The Gendarmerie is where you need to go to report anything that's been lost or stolen – usually skis – and they'll give you a police report for your insurance company. Take your passport with you, and remember they're closed over lunchtime.

Don't confuse the Gendarmerie with the Police Municipale. They're based halfway between the town centre and the petrol station and deal with local parking, traffic and municipal matters rather than crime, so they won't be able to help if your skis disappear. But they’re who you’ll need to see if your car get’s towed away!

Banks

There are several banks on the main street, all with cash machines, and there's another cash machine at the Post Office. None of the banks do foreign exchange though.

Tourist Office

The Office de Tourisme is on the main square and is open all day, every day throughout the winter season.

Parking

There is no free long-term parking in Val d'Isère, although there are a few places where you can stop while unloading your luggage ("dépose minute") or park for a couple of hours. For these you'll need a blue European parking disc displayed behind your windscreen. You can pick one up from the Town Hall reception next to the Tourist Office, but it's easier to buy one before you travel as they're inexpensive and valid throughout much of Europe.

If you're bringing a car for the week, we strongly recommend booking one of the covered car parks in advance through Q-Park.

Electric Vehicle Charging

If you're bringing an electric car, plan ahead. There aren't many public charging points in Val d'Isère and only the two outdoor chargers opposite the Sherpa supermarket in the town centre have Tesla connectors. There are additional charging points near the cable car in Le Fornet and in most, although not all, of the Q-Park car parks.
