Things to do in Val d'Isère

02. Off-Mountain Activities

Once you're down the mountain and have your ski boots off, there are still plenty of activities to make sure you go to bed absolutely exhausted and sleep like a log – ready, of course, to do it all again tomorrow!

The obvious place to start is our impressive sports centre, at the bottom of the Face de Bellevarde on the back road.

The facilities here are extensive, with a well-equipped gym, climbing wall, squash courts, a multi-sports hall and a wellness area with saunas, hammams and jacuzzis.

The pièce de résistance, though, is not one but two enormous pools. There's a freeform pool complete with jets, fountains and other features or, for the serious swimmers out there, a four-lane 25-metre pool for laps. Best of all – with a 6 or more day ski pass for the whole area you get two free entries to the pool!

As well as the sports centre, most of the larger hotels have a pool and wellness area with spa treatments and so on, and most of them are open to the public. We particularly like the Avenue Lodge, just across the road from our Streetside shop, for a bit of luxury at an affordable price.

Ice skating is a classic après-ski activity.

Our outdoor ice rink is just off the edge of the nursery slopes, a couple of hundred metres from the village centre. There are floodlights and music for a festive atmosphere and, of course, you can hire ice skates there too.

Once again, Evolution 2 have a wide range of off-mountain activities to choose from, from dog sledding in the peaceful Manchet Valley to diving under an ice-covered lake, E-buggy driving on the roof of the sports centre to electric snowmobiles for kids from age five upwards.

And the one Evolution 2 activity we're pretty sure our team would pick above all others is the Wilderness Camp evening. They take you away to their secret hideaway in the woods where you have drinks around a campfire and a traditional Savoyard dinner in a yurt, then toboggan 4 km (yes, FOUR kilometres!) down a snow-covered road to the bottom of the whole ski area in Les Brévières, where they pick you up. We do this as a staff event every year and it's one of the highlights of the season.

Lastly for those interested in finding out more about what goes on behind the scenes in Val d’Isère, away from all the tourists, there are a few regular guided tours you can join from discovering the old village or a visiting to the farm to a tour of the workings of the snow factory which ensures we all have the best possible conditions to ski in from November right through to the beginning of May.

Or visit the museum and find out about how and when skiing first came to our valley and how the town has developed since.
