Getting to Val d’Isère

01. By Plane

For most international visitors, flying is the quickest and easiest option.

The closest airports to Val d'Isère are Chambéry, about two hours away by road, Grenoble (around 2½ hours), and Lyon and Geneva (both approximately three hours).

Geneva is by far the busiest gateway to Val d'Isère and, for many visitors, offers the greatest choice of flights.

During the winter there are direct services from London, most major UK regional airports and dozens of cities across Europe. In fact, easyJet alone operates almost 50 flights a day between the UK and Geneva during the ski season, giving travellers enormous flexibility over departure times.

Budget airlines have forced the price of these flights right down and, outside peak periods, it's often possible to fly from London for under £30.

However, don't overlook the traditional airlines. Once you've added hold luggage, ski carriage and seat selection to a low-cost ticket, the difference in price is often much smaller than it first appears.

Geneva and Lyon are also well served by long-haul international flights, making them convenient arrival points for visitors travelling from North America, Asia and many other parts of the world.

Scheduled flights to Grenoble and Chambéry aren't as common and tend to be concentrated around weekends, although there are still plenty available.

Onward transport to Val d'Isère can sometimes be more difficult to organise and more expensive, particularly if there are only one or two people in your group. In the end, flying to Geneva or Lyon is often the easier and more economical option.
